Using Vlingo Voice Command for iPhone & Blackberry

December 21st, 2008

While this video shows the Vlingo application for iPhone, it is available fo Blackberry & various other devices. Currently, it is only able to update Facebook and Titter for Social Networks via voice command. I expect Vlingo to expand this to additional Social Networks but in the meantime its still a pretty nice app and will make it a little safer for folks updating on the road because we never text update while we drive ;). It will even do voice cammands for Google searches, map directions and much more. Best part, its FREE !

BlackBerry and the New 2007 Daylight Savings Time

November 2nd, 2007

blackberry_daylight_2007.jpgI find a lot of great information from others and forward it on to my clients. One is by, Martin Trautschold an expert in Blackberry training @ Blackberry Made Simple. Here is his great tip about the new daylight savings time.

You may be aware that in North America, Daylight Savings Time is changing this year to start earlier and end later. The device clocks in your BlackBerry will NOT update automatically when the DST date changes unless you (or your BlackBerry Administrator, if you are a corporate user) update software on your BlackBerry. This DST change may also impact your computer, you may want to check with your computer operating system supplier to see if there are any “patches” required for 2007 DST changes.

If your BlackBerry is not updated, your calendar events between the following dates will show up one hour off on your BlackBerry device:

  • Between the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in April (for example, 11 March 2007 to 1 April 2007)

  • Between the last Sunday in October and the first Sunday in November (for example, 28 October 2007 to 4 November 2007)

If you are a corporate BlackBerry user, please wait for announcements from your BlackBerry Administrator or IT staff - they will need to solve this issue centrally.

If you are an individual user of BlackBerry, then please proceed

to: http://www.blackberry.com/select/dst2007/ to learn more about this issue and update your BlackBerry. These DST patches were just released today, February 12, 2007.

Virtual Keyboard for your Mobile Device

September 15th, 2007

Virtual laser keyboard for mobile cell phoneCheck out this great keyboard accessory!

Best of all its now Bluetooth capable. It actually sprays out a laser keyboard. It reads the light breaks as you type. Its much easier to use than some of the older fold out keyboards and you don’t have to worry about comfort.

Ease: 9

Comfort: 9 Price: 4It’s a little pricy at around $179-$199

Drawbacks are few. Just need a flat surface. It is compatible with Windows Mobile, Blackberry, and Palm OS and even a few Smart cell phones.

Blackberry gets a Curve

June 11th, 2007

The Blackberry 8300, better known as the Curve, is the latest and hottest Blackberry out. i had a chance to get my hands on one this past week. Its a great new design. It’s the smallest & lightest of the Blackberry with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Face_Blackberry Curve

Whats New

It’s smaller, lighter and has a 2.0 MP camera. in addition, it now has comprehensive media support (WMA, WMV, and H.263 all make the cut), stereo Bluetooth, a true 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD expansion for if you exhaust your 64MB of internal ROM

Design

It’s a sleek sexy design. Its corners are curvy, hence the name and has a great shiny silver color. It’s more narrow and shorter than the 8800 Pearl.

What’s Missing

Still absent is the integrated Wi-Fi or 3G support. Also, the device’s camera still doesn’t have video-recording capabilities.

The biggest thing though for me, no internal GPS receiver like the 8800. While i love the Curve,Blackberry Curve This would have made it the perfect all in one device for me. While you still can use the an external GPS receiver (”puck”), it’s not as convenient on the fly. Especially, if you are in another city, you may often want to leave your puck in the car. This is the only thing holding me back to switching because I am on the road so much and rely on the GPS using Telenav.

Price

Pretty reasonable @ $199.99 after $50 mail-in-rebate on a 2 year agreement, from the New AT&T.

Bottom line

If you do not rely heavy on GPS, or maybe you have one on your vehicle already, this device is awesome. Great resolution, easy navigation and have I mention light and sleek yet? Best feeling Blackberry I have put in my hands with a full QWERTY keyboard. The roller ball navigation is great too.

Boosting your Cell Phone Signal

May 21st, 2007

Do you have a hard time getting signal from your carrier inside your home?
IF so, you may be in luck with Spotwave Signal Booster.

Spotwave Signal BoosterThe Z1900 Signal Booster repeats signal throughout hour home or office up to 2,500 sq feet. It boosts signal for cell phones along with data devices like air cards for laptops and PDA phones such as Blackberry and Treo’s.
Keep in mind if you have absolutely no coverage, it will not help you any. Boosting nothing still gives you nothing. You must have signal outside or near windows.

It works decent if you have at least 2 bars at your window. One bar it depends on where you are located relative to the tower. Its best to put the booster on the side of the house facing the cell tower you are using.

At $399 its reasonable if you need it for business. If not, you may just want to forward your calls to your home phone if you still use a land line. Typically, carriers will give you an allotment of minutes to forward (please check with your carrier).

Please check your carrier to see what frequency they are using in your area and be sure you get the one that is compatible. Spotwave & companies like Wilson have technical info on their site which should narrow down which one would work for you.

There are more robust boosters for commercial use as well.

Note: Check your wireless carrier agreement on terms & condition regarding repeating their signal.

GPS for your Phone

April 9th, 2007

Telenav phone directionsTelenav is a great feature you can add to many Smartphone’s. It’s in color and it has voice guided driving directions and you can even view it in 3-D. I love the fact I don’t have to have a separate device anymore. And with my Blackberry Pearl 8800 the GPS receiver is built in!

Requirements:

  • A phone that will support it. Click here to find out which ones
  • A Bluetooth GPS receiver. (some phones are now coming out with built in GPS receivers)
  • Telenav feature

Pros:

  • You can use it for both driver and pedestrian mode
  • Consolidate devices
  • Fairly accurate

Cons:

  • GPS reception is tricky during rainy weather, and if the receiver is not near dash.
  • Currently works with limited amount of phones

Things to consider:
Currently only a couple of carriers have this billed through their billing. Others you must actually purchase through Telenav on a monthly basis.
